Does my house need a rewire?
Your house may need a rewire if it still has rubber, lead or fabric-covered cables, an old fuse box with rewireable fuses, no RCD protection, scorch marks around sockets, or circuits that keep tripping. Wiring that has not been checked for many years should be inspected. Our guide to the signs you need a rewire covers ten warning signs in detail.
The reliable way to find out is an EICR, which tests every circuit and tells you whether a full rewire, a partial rewire or just a few repairs are needed.
What happens during house rewires in Birmingham?
A house rewire happens in two main stages, first fix and second fix, with testing and certification at the end:
- Survey and quote. We inspect the property, test the existing installation and give you a clear written quote.
- Plan the layout. We agree socket, switch and lighting positions with you, which is the ideal time to add USB sockets, outdoor power or an EV charger circuit.
- First fix. We lift floorboards, chase cables into walls and run new circuits before any plastering.
- Second fix. Once walls are made good, we fit the sockets, switches, light fittings and a new consumer unit.
- Test, certify and notify. Every circuit is tested, you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is registered with building control.

How long does a rewire take and can I stay at home?
A typical three-bedroom house takes around five to ten working days, depending on its size, access and whether other trades are working at the same time. Many people stay at home during house rewires in Birmingham, although there will be dust, noise and periods without power; we plan the work room by room and restore power at the end of each day where possible.
Do I need a full rewire or a partial rewire?
A full rewire is needed when most of the wiring is old or unsafe; a partial rewire is enough when only part of the installation, such as a kitchen or an extension, needs replacing.
| Full rewire | Partial rewire | |
|---|---|---|
| When it makes sense | Old cable types throughout, repeated faults, major renovation | One area is old, damaged or being renovated |
| Typical scope | All cables, accessories and usually the consumer unit | Selected circuits, often a kitchen, extension or one floor |
| Disruption | Whole house, around five to ten working days | Limited to the affected rooms |
Do you rewire for renovations, extensions and rentals?
Yes. We work with homeowners, builders and developers on refurbishments, extensions, loft conversions and kitchen renovations, and with landlords who need remedial work after an unsatisfactory EICR. Rewiring is notifiable under Approved Document P, and as a NAPIT registered contractor we register it for you. We also carry out commercial rewiring for offices, retail premises and warehouses.
