EV Charger Installation in Birmingham and Battery Storage

Sam Ward Electrical provides EV charger installation in Birmingham and across the West Midlands for homes and workplaces. A typical home charger is a 7kW smart unit on its own circuit, fitted in about half a day after we check your supply, consumer unit and earthing. We also install home battery storage, with or without solar panels.

What does EV charger installation in Birmingham involve?

EV charger installation means a survey of your electrics, a new dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, mounting and connecting the charger, then testing, certifying and notifying the work. This is how we handle each job:

  1. Survey the supply. We check your main fuse rating, consumer unit, earthing arrangement and the cable route to where you park.
  2. Choose the charger. We help you pick a tethered or untethered unit, with solar compatibility if you have or plan solar panels.
  3. Install the circuit. A new circuit with the correct RCD protection runs from your consumer unit to the charger position.
  4. Add earthing protection. Most homes have a PME supply, so the charger needs open-PEN protection, either built in or provided by an earth rod.
  5. Test, certify and notify. We test everything, issue an Electrical Installation Certificate, register the work under Part P and notify the network operator, National Grid Electricity Distribution in the West Midlands.
  6. Hand over. We set up the app with you and show you how to schedule charging for cheaper off-peak hours.

Every EV charger installation in Birmingham that we complete is certified and registered, so you have the paperwork your insurer, landlord or a future buyer may ask for. You can read more about the process in our home EV charger installation guide.

Which EV charger should I choose?

For most homes a 7kW single-phase smart charger is the right choice. The best model depends on whether you want a fixed cable, whether you have solar panels and which app you prefer.

Common home EV charger options
OptionWhat it meansBest for
TetheredThe charging cable is fixed to the chargerConvenience: plug in and go
UntetheredA socket on the charger; you use your own cableA tidy look, or households with different cars
Solar-compatibleCan charge the car from surplus solar power, for example the myenergi ZappiHomes with solar PV
Smart schedulingCharges automatically at off-peak timesDrivers on a cheaper overnight tariff

We have installed chargers including the myenergi Zappi, Ohme and Hypervolt, and you can see several of them in our project gallery. Since 30 June 2022, new home and workplace chargers sold in Great Britain must have smart functions under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.

How fast will a home charger charge my car?

A 7kW home charger adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour, so most electric cars charge fully overnight. A standard three-pin plug manages about 2.3kW, around a third of that speed. Faster 11kW and 22kW chargers need a three-phase supply, which most homes do not have but many commercial premises do.

Can I get a grant for an EV charger?

Possibly. GOV.UK lists chargepoint grants for renters and flat owners with off-street parking, households with only on-street parking using approved cross-pavement solutions, landlords and workplaces. Eligibility and amounts change, so check the current rules on GOV.UK before you book. We will tell you if your installation needs anything specific for a grant claim.

Do you install workplace and commercial EV chargers?

Yes. We install charge points for offices, car parks, workshops and fleets, from a single unit to several chargers. For larger sites we look at your available supply, three-phase options and load management, so the chargers never overload the building.

Is home battery storage worth adding?

Home battery storage lets you store cheap overnight electricity, or surplus solar power, and use it at peak times. It suits households on a time-of-use tariff and anyone with solar panels who is out during the day. We install complete systems such as the Sigenergy battery in our gallery and size them from your actual usage. Our solar battery storage guide explains when a battery pays off.

EV Charger and Battery Storage FAQs

How long does EV charger installation take?

Most home installations take about half a day. Jobs with a long cable run, groundwork or a consumer unit upgrade can take a full day, and we will tell you this when we quote.

Do I need to tell my electricity network operator about an EV charger?

Yes, home chargers must be notified to the distribution network operator, and we do this for you. In the West Midlands that is National Grid Electricity Distribution. Larger chargers, or homes with a limited supply, may need approval before installation.

Can my house supply cope with an EV charger?

In most cases, yes. We check the main fuse rating and your existing load first. Where needed we fit a charger with load management, which reduces its output when the rest of the house is using a lot of power.

Do I need off-street parking for a home charger?

For a standard home charger, yes, because the cable must not trail across a public pavement. If you only have on-street parking, ask us about approved cross-pavement solutions and the government grant for them.

Can an EV charger run on solar power?

Yes. Solar-compatible chargers such as the myenergi Zappi can send surplus solar generation into your car. We install solar panels and battery storage too, so we can plan all three to work together.

Is home battery storage worth it without solar panels?

It can be if you are on a time-of-use tariff, because the battery charges at the cheaper overnight rate and powers the home at peak times. Savings depend on your usage and tariff, so we look at your bills before recommending a size.

From start to finish, he was professional, punctual, and really easy to work with. He took the time to explain what he was doing, worked neatly, and made sure everything was tested and tidied up properly before leaving.
