How does solar panel installation in Birmingham work?

Solar panel installation starts with a survey of your roof and electrics, then design, mounting, wiring and commissioning. Each step is planned so the system is safe, efficient and correctly notified:

  1. Survey. We look at roof orientation, shading, the roof structure, your consumer unit and how much electricity you use.
  2. Design. We size the panels, inverter and any battery, and decide whether the system falls under G98 or G99 network rules.
  3. Mount the panels. Once scaffolding is up, the panels are fixed to a roof-mounted rail system, with bird mesh where it is needed.
  4. Wire the system. We install the inverter, AC and DC isolators, generation meter and battery, and connect them to your consumer unit.
  5. Test and hand over. We test and commission the system, notify the network operator, and give you the certificates and monitoring app.

Every solar panel installation in Birmingham we carry out is tested and certified to BS 7671. If your consumer unit is old or full, we can upgrade it at the same time.

Do I need permission to install solar panels?

Most rooftop solar panels on houses in England count as permitted development, so planning permission is not usually needed. Listed buildings, some conservation-area properties and installations that would stand well above the roof can need consent; the Planning Portal explains the limits. The network operator must also be told: systems up to 16A per phase (about 3.68kW on a single-phase supply) are notified after installation under G98, while larger systems need G99 approval before they are connected. We handle both.

Should I add battery storage to solar panels?

A battery lets you use more of the electricity your panels generate by storing the daytime surplus for the evening. Whether it pays back depends on how much power you use after dark and which tariff you are on. A battery can be fitted with new panels or added to an existing system later; our solar battery storage guide explains how to size one.

Can I get paid for the electricity I export?

Yes. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers pay you for electricity your system exports to the grid. Rates vary between suppliers, and they normally ask for an MCS certificate for the installation, so we confirm the certification route for your system when we quote.

Do you install commercial solar panel systems?

Yes. Commercial solar suits offices, retail units, warehouses, schools, hospitality venues and agricultural buildings, where most electricity is used in daylight hours. We assess the roof, the supply and any three-phase requirements, and plan the installation to keep disruption to your business low. The Energy Saving Trust has useful independent advice on how solar performs in the UK.

Solar Panel and Battery FAQs

How long does solar panel installation take?

Most home systems take one to two days on site once scaffolding is up. Larger roofs, battery storage and commercial systems take longer, and we give you a timeline with the quote.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine, so they still produce power on cloudy days, just less of it. Output is highest from late spring to early autumn.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Birmingham?

Usually not, because most rooftop panels on houses are permitted development. Listed buildings and some properties in conservation areas are exceptions, so check with Birmingham City Council if your home may be affected.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Usually, yes. A battery can often be added alongside your existing inverter, or the inverter can be replaced with a hybrid unit. We check your system first and recommend the simplest option.

How much roof space do I need for solar panels?

A modern panel is roughly 1.7 metres by 1.1 metres. A typical home system of around ten panels needs about 20 square metres of roof that is not heavily shaded, ideally facing somewhere between east and west through south.

Can solar panels charge my electric car?

Yes. With a solar-compatible charger such as the myenergi Zappi, surplus solar power can go straight into your car. We install both, so the system can be designed to work together.
